| INTRODUCTION: A Discovery Lab is a learning center using science and technology to develop students’ skills in investigation and problem solving. Once a year a special thematic unit is designed by teachers in a collaborative effort, to integrate activities using technology, math, social studies, and language arts to meet the diverse needs of students. Real life investigations are the key. Students use the scientific process to observe, hypothesize, experiment and come to the particular conclusions specified by teachers in the unit plan. TASK: Today we are going to take on the roles of staff developing a special thematic unit for 5th graders. The theme is: Lewis and Clark Expedition. The unit will consist of 3 stations/lessons. You will work in a group of three. You are asked to collaboratively create only one technology and science based station/lesson plan and provide the answers to the following: 1. Three learning objectives (two are provided below; feel free to create all 3 on your own.) 2. How will the students incorporate this information into the 3 station unit? 3. Type of instructional strategy: (constructivist, directed, both- see the handout) 4. Accommodations for special needs students. 5. Create assessment - based on your individual station. Web sites provided below in resource section could be of help to you creating the lesson plan. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Select and analyze information from multiple resources. 2. Integrate information from primary documents with other information sources 3. The following standards may be of help to you while creating the lesson plan. ISTE NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS: 2. Social, ethical, and human issues. 5. Technology research tools. CT STANDARDS for 5th grade. LANGUAGE ARTS: Standard 1. Reading and Responding. Students read, comprehend and respond in individual, literal, critical and evaluative ways to literary, informational and persuasive texts in both print and multimedia formats. 1.1 activate prior knowledge, establish purposes for reading and adjust the purposes while reading. 1.2 interpret information that is implied in a text SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY in SOCIETY STANDARDS: 5.4 Humans have the capacity to build and use tools to advance the quality of their lives. 5.2 Perceiving and responding to information about the environment is critical to the survival of organisms. MATH STANDARDS: How do geometric relationships and measurements help us to solve problems and make sense of our world? 3.3 Develop and apply units, systems, formulas and appropriate tools to estimate and measure. a. Solve problems in the measure of time and in converting units of length in the customary and metric systems using specific ratios. 4.2 Analyze data sets to form hypotheses and make predictions. a. Examine different data collection methods and their effects. SOCIAL STUDIES: Content Standard 1- Historical Thinking. Performance Standards: Formulate historical questions based on primary and secondary sources. Gather information from multiple sources, including electronic databases. Analyze data in order to see persons and events in their historical context, understand casual factors and appreciate change over time.
